Heathrow airport is the UK's primary and largest airport, with 5 terminals the latest and exciting Terminal 5 opening in 2008. Further development works are in the pipeline to replace terminals 1 and 2 and the construction of a Terminal 2A and redevelopment of Terminals 3 & 4.
Heathrow is the world's busiest international airport with 93 airlines operating from Heathrow servicing 183 destinations in 90 countries worldwide with 93% of passenger flights international.
Heathrow started life as a private airport in 1930 when a private aircraft builder purchased 150 acre plot for £15,000 to build, assemble and test small aircraft. The modest grass runway and hastily erected building was the humble precursor to what is now the busiest international airport in the world.
Following the Second World War the aerodrome was handed back to the Air Ministry in 1946 to become London's primary civil airport. The first aircraft to take off from the new airport was a converted Lancaster bomber called Starlight that flew to Buenos Aires. The leading architect Frederick Gibberd was appointed to design permanent buildings for the airport. His extensive plan saw the creation of a central hub area which was accessed via a ‘vehicular subway' running underneath the original main runway, the focal point being a 122ft-high control tower.
By 1969 passenger levels had increased so much that additional terminals were required to cope with the volume and the construction of Terminals 1,2,3. The jet age was upon us and wide bodied Boeing aircraft carrying double the numbers of passengers and Concorde had started offering a super fast daily service to New York. By the end of the 70's passenger levels had exceeded 27 Million and the demand for air travel was such that a Terminal 4 was constructed which opened in 1986.
Today Heathrow is the world's busiest international airport and the hub of the civil aviation world, with a wide choice of business lounges and excellent facilities, with the latest Terminal 5 Heathrow is the jewel in the crown. Heathrow is located west of London adjacent to the M4 Junction 4 for Terminals 1,2,3, A30 for Terminal 4 and M25 Junction 14 for Terminal 5.
There are multi-story short stay car parks opposite the terminal buildings. You can drop off passengers outside the terminal building, but if you want to visit the terminal building you should use the car park.
