Luton Airport started life in 1938. Luton Airport occupies a hill top location as the topography of the Luton area adjacent to the Chiltern Hills influenced the location of the airport.

After the military use of Luton airport during the second world war the airport returned to domestic use providing a base for operators such as Euravia [Now known as Thomson Airways] which grew fast during the 60's and 70's explosion in short hall European package holidays along with growth of Britannia Airways and Monarch Airlines.

By 1972 Luton Airport was the most profitable airport in the country handling up to 20 million passengers a year with the explosion in working class package holidays. Unfortunately the airport suffered a setback in 1974 when a major package holiday operator, Clarkson's, scheduling flights via its airline Court Line went bankrupt.

A series of extensive investment during the 80's included the rebuilding of the new international terminal in 1985 and by 1990 the airport was renamed London Luton Airport to emphasize the airports importance to London.

In 1991 Ryanair transferred its operations to Stansted as its base, but newly formed MYTravel Group began charter flights from Luton Airport with the ‘Airtours' brand along with low cost Debonair and Easyjet established Luton airport as their hub of operations.

Luton Airport boasts a modern and spacious terminal building designed by [Foster & Partners] which was opened by her majesty the Queen in 1999 including 60 check in desks, a wide range of shops, restaurants and bars.

You can drop off passengers outside the terminal building, but if you want to visit the terminal building you should use the car park and for long stay more than a day you should pre book to ensure space and a cheaper price.
