Stansted airport is situated in glorious green belt countryside in the heart of Essex and naturally limited to expansion due to its location. Stansted is approximately 30 miles north west of Central London.

Stansted Terminal building was designed by leading architects featuring a ‘Floating Roof' which emulates a swan in flight. The impression is of a light airy feel with a vast open plan effect with all facilities on one ground floor level. From 1996 to 2007 Stansted airport saw a dramatic increase in passenger numbers due to the low cost no frills airlines including Easy Jet & Ryan Air and others who are based there, with passenger levels reaching 24 Million in 2007 but now in decline as the economic squeeze has impacted on package holiday travel.

Stansted airfield opened in 1943 formerly known as Stansted Mountfitchet during War use by both the Royal Air force and the US Army Air Force. Post War it simply became known as Stansted, was used as a storage & maintenance unit for the RAF. Finally the airport was used for civilian air flights but subsequently used by the US Military in 1954 for possible NATO work. The airport was at last returned to civil use in 1957 and now under control of the BAA in 1966.

Stansted airport is the UK's 4th largest airport in terms of passenger traffic, with 1 Terminal and 1 runway with planning in the process for a second runway. Stansted airport is located approximately 8 miles from Harlow in Essex and 30 miles from Central London. Stansted has 41 airlines operating servicing to 160 destinations mainly short haul some international and domestic.

During the late nineties to mid 2007 low cost airlines boosted the demand for cheaper flights and started a revolution in short haul journeys to lesser known European destinations.

Today Stansted is a busy airport with mainly short haul flights catering for the thrifty business traveler and family travelers looking for a low cost flight with a well designed simple airport providing excellent services to all. Stansted Airport is adjacent the M11 at Junction 8 and accessed by the south from the M25 Junction 27.

Due to planning restrictions there are low level car parks near the terminal. You can drop off passengers outside the terminal building, but if you want to visit the terminal building you should use the car park.
