Air passenger numbers rise to new heights

Figures have just been released by BAA that show UK air passenger numbers are now at their highest since March 2008. All in all, a total of 9.9 million passengers used airports run by BAA in the month of November. This is an increase of 0.8% over passenger figures in the previous month of October.
BAA reported in a statement that the air travel numbers reflect a new confidence in consumers. BAA Chief Executive Colin Matthews said: “Global market conditions remain challenging, but these figures are encouraging.”
However, the picture wasn’t quite so rosy at every airport. Passenger numbers for both Aberdeen and Glasgow airports were actually down by 4%. On the other hand, passenger numbers at Heathrow airport expanded by 1.1%, bringing their figures to 5 million passengers.
Gatwick airport, which is due to be taken over by American firm, Global Infrastructure Partners in January, saw its final month under BAA ownership increase its air traveler numbers to 2.1 million people, which was 4.5% greater than the previous month.
BAA also controls Stansted, Edinburgh and Southampton airports.
