British Airways hopes to avoid strike action

The chief executive of British Airways, Willie Walsh, has started to hold talks with union leaders who are vying for a strike ballot. The troubled airline has recently announced plans to cut up to 1,700 jobs in order to advert the financial loss of money the firm is suffering from year after year. The announcement also included plans to cut employees wages and working hours. With plans to cut a total of 3,700 jobs in the next 12 months, the initial loss of 1,700 positions will primarily affect cabin crew and administrative workers.
The airline workers union has already stated that it will call for strike action if there proposed changes are implemented on staff, and the two sides are now at loggerheads. Having written to the union’s joint leader, Derek Simpson, British Airways released the following statement:
“The discussion about cabin crew pay and productivity issues was open and frank. After the meeting, Mr Walsh wrote to Mr Simpson. A response is awaited.”
However, whilst a response is still to be made from the union, a happy outcome to the debate seems a distant possibility. The union branded the job cut proposals a “fundamental attack” on their workers right. Union representatives sent a letter out last week to all its members stating “If no progress is made at that meeting, a ballot for industrial action is inevitable.” We await to see if there will be a positive outcome to all this, otherwise a Christmas strike date looks to be set, inevitably causing chaos for all travelers…
