Simon Arron, a sports columnist from the Daily Telegraph was recently offered the opportunity to discover a previously unexplored racetrack in Portugal to report on a couple of vintage races. Flying off from Gatwick to Faro airport with others on route to their holidays, Simon’s only went for a couple of days over the weekend.
The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, near Portimão is where he and other sports correspondents eventually ended up to preview the latest round of the Le Mans Series which arrives at Silverstone in September. Unfortunately parking at Faro for journalists is not wonderful and they had to seek out parking spaces (and food) nearer the coast!
Set in the Algarve Hills, you can get a panoramic view to most of the course. Cars racing included those from the 60’s and 70’s and qualifying for the race started early, with the proper race starting midday, with Simon roaming around the course in the hot sun, happily taking ‘photos. The crowd arrived in the early evening for the popular races, but after a couple of days of taking in the hot sunshine, complimentary red wine and sending off his copy, the weekend came to halt and he begrudgingly caught the Easy Jet home on Sunday evening, back to Gatwick.
When going on holiday remember to book your Gatwick parking in time for your holiday.
