No Third Runway for Heathrow Airport
Should we complain or should we rejoice? The surges in aviation emissions and the Climate Change Act are among the reasons to object to the third runway. However, the Labour Party still supports expansion to the airport’s runway system.
Many of the government leaders have spoken against the extra runway at Heathrow. For one, London’s Conservative Mayor Boris Johnson has spoken against the runway although he says that airport should expand in other areas to serve the city of London. Some celebrities have spoken against the airport’s extra runway as well. Such names as Emma Thompson and Alistair McGowan have even bought small plots of ground near the airport so they can stop any such action as the runway expansion.
Greenpeace has recently signed up 91,000 owners of a piece of land that would be in the runway if it happened. Those members of Greenpeace have definitely made their interest known. Those who actually wanted the new expansion included runway supporter Glenda Jackson. Her son and daughter-in-law actively campaigned in favor of the runway. She managed to keep her seat in spite of a challenge by Tomsin Ormond of Climate Rush.
It seems that the vast of majority of residents have made their wishes known. The third runway for Heathrow is off the drawing boards. In April of 2010, the Parliamentary candidates rejected the runway. Only the UKIP candidate for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, Mark Wadsworth, gave his support for the runway expansion.
The worded transcript which heralded the Heathrow third runway was a short sentence in the Section 11 which contained the agreements reached on the environment. In the short break between the “The establishment of a high-speed rail network” and “The refusal of additional runways at Gatwick and Stansted” were the phrase “The cancellation of the third runway at Heathrow”.
The change is there. Should we complain or rejoice? For now, the decision is not in favor of the third runway at Heathrow.
